FAMILY 02 - THE ROLE OF A FATHER

WHAT IS A FATHER AND WHO IS HE ACTUALLY SUPPOSED TO BE?

With many breakdowns of families, identity crises, and media twisting what the family unit should look like, and if you’ve read the previous blog and know that family is supposed to reflect the Holy Trinity, you may be asking yourself, “What is the role of a father in a family?”

Look no further! We have the answers for you right here in this blog post!

A father in the home is created in the likeness of the Heavenly Father. As a man and father, he bears the responsibility and accountability of his family before God. Just as Eve was given into Adam’s charge, a wife and family are given to the charge of a man. This doesn’t mean that a father can just do what he wants in the home. It means that he must take responsibility for his family. This responsibility includes protecting and providing for his family.

Just as the Father God has served mankind by blessing us and sending His Son, Jesus, to die for us, a father’s role is ultimately to serve his family. Alongside his wife, he should come underneath his children and bless them, showing them God’s way and bringing God’s plans to pass on the Earth. A father imparts; he teaches and trains his children in the way that they should go – God’s way, so that when they are grown up, they too will walk in the ways of God and lead their families to follow after God (Proverbs 22:6). Such is the generational nature of a father – he creates in his likeness, just as God created in His likeness.

A family can only be as strong as the father is; this is God’s order which He established not only on Earth but it is also the order of the Godhead. The choices of a father steer the course for his family. Society is made up of families, which means that the choices that fathers are making determine the direction that our society and culture will go in. As much as a father will compromise in his family is as much as society will be compromised.

What does this mean for you as a father? To seek God and to rise up to the responsibility that you have as a man. What does this mean for you if you are a wife or a mother? To come alongside your husband, praying for him. Together you have an assignment to fulfill and together, with your children, you as a family are capable of being a powerful force for God changing the very environment in which you live.
